Rocky Mountain High

My kids and I left Saturday morning to drive to Colorado. I didn’t do what we usually do when we drive to Colorado, which is to get up at 3:00 am and get on the road, which gives the kids a chance to sleep in the car for a few hours, and which makes the 10-hour car trip seem a lot shorter for them.

Instead, we left well after daylight. Which, by comparison, made the drive seem like it took 27 hours.

We all still loved each other when we arrived in Vail…

But none of us were speaking. Ha.

excitedBut that just made us that more excited to get there!

gondola1My sister-in-law Missy met us there with my niece and nephew, and we had a great day together yesterday.

gondola3We rode the gondola to the top…

vail2Then the eight of us donned harnesses and tackled the ropes course.

ropes2That’s me right there, having some serious hiney cringes.

That fear-of-heights sensation…it is profound and real.

But all in all, it was an amazing experience!

Even though I can’t move my arms today.

ziplineAs if that wasn’t enough, we went zip-lining. And get this: We had to step on a scale before we went so they could determine what size of contraption we each needed. And even though (as of last Friday) I have officially lost twenty pounds, because of all the clothes and harnesses and helmet stuff I had to wear, that weight loss totally bit the dust! So I had to bite my tongue to keep from laying out my defense to the nineteen-year-old guy who’s working the zip-line for the summer that thanks to my FitBit and a summer of walking, I have lost twenty pounds, so whatever his zip-line scale says is TOTALLY UNTRUE AND SKEWED because of all this gear he’s making me wear.

I’m sure he would have been totally riveted. Most nineteen-year-old guys are captivated when a middle-aged woman talks to them about their weight loss and fitness journey.

kidsWe had lots of adventures together on top of the mountain…then we just enjoyed walking around town and exploring. It’s so great to get all the country kids together…with not a hint of manure in sight!

mountainsWe’re all here for Haley’s wedding later this week, and we’re enjoying having a little break after all the haying and shipping (and shooting and construction) of the last six weeks. Marlboro Man and Tim stayed behind to work cattle and get some things sorted around the ranch, and they’ll meet us up here in a few days.

I’ll post more about our adventures tomorrow. Missy said something about mountain bikes and I pretended like I didn’t hear her.

Maybe I’ll get lucky and she’ll forget…
